McCann likely headed to the DL.
It’s been three weeks since Opening Day and Mac already might be headed for the 15-day DL. According to reports from the AJC and the official site, Mac has made it all but definite that something must be done to fix the blurry vision and dryness in his left eye. While he’s not quite sure exactly what is going on with his eye, he knows that another Lasik procedure will probably have to be performed to correct the problems.
Mac removed himself out of the lineup before Friday night’s game after batting practice with recurring symptoms in his left eye. He was given eye drops, antibiotic ointment, and two different contacts to attempt to remedy the problems the past few weeks, none of which seemed to help the All-Star catcher very much. Mac will presumably go see a third eye doctor this week when the team returns to Atlanta.
“I feel like with my contact in, my eye every five seconds it’s blurry again,” McCann said. “It’s just dry and I’m not seeing good out of it.”
In lieu of Mac’s eye apparently not getting any better, the Braves will more than likely opt to DL him today. Clint Sammons has been called up from AAA Gwinnett and will be on hand to back up David Ross. Of course, Bobby wishes that Mac would wait to see a third doctor about his eye to weigh all of Mac’s options before placing him on the DL, but still the Braves cannot go with one catcher on their roster for any extended period of time.
Mac has said that he would rather get the problem solved now instead of waiting past the All-Star Game to see about getting it corrected. I think Mac is being smart about this decision and that he should have whatever procedure that needs to be done to get this eye problem past him. The sooner he gets this problem fixed, the sooner he’ll be back in the lineup and hopefully back to normal.
“I’ve been dealing with this since Opening Day and I’d rather take a couple of weeks to get this thing squared away so that I can finish the season, instead of grinding it out every single day, not knowing what I’m going to get with my eyesight,” McCann said. “It just got to the point where I wasn’t helping my team or myself. ”
…
“I’d rather take some time now and get this thing squared away than wait and it continue to not get better and we’re sitting at the All-Star break and I still haven’t produced,” McCann said.
