Braves extend offer to Glavine, still looking for left fielder

The Braves have made an offer this week to veteran lefty Tom Glavine, Mark Bowman reports. The offer is a one-year Major League contract and is believed to be between $1 and $2 million, with no incentives included. According to Bowman, it seems Glavine is a bit hesitant to accept the deal. We’ll hopefully see within the next few days, with spring training a week from tomorrow, if he accepts it or not.

The need for starting pitching isn’t great, as they still have Jorge Campillo, Jo-Jo Reyes, Charlie Morton, Tommy Hanson, and James Parr all vying for the fifth spot in the rotation. Glavine would be an added bonus to the equation and would most certainly take on the role of the fifth spot if he accepts the Braves’ offer. If the Braves offer is turned down by Glavine, he will likely pitch elsewhere or retire, as the offer will most likely not be increased.

In the article linked above, Bowman goes on to say the Braves remaining funds are limited to somewhere around $5 to $6 million. He also mentions that the Braves are still in the hunt for a left fielder. Bobby is unsure of who will be in left field or center field at this point. Bowman lists the Braves currently having interest in free agent Bobby Abreu, as well as trading for Nick Swisher or Xavier Nady with the Yankees.

Not mentioned in this article was the status of free agent Will Ohman with the Braves. The Braves made him an unknown offer in November, and he recently has stated in texts that “he is not at liberty to discuss the state of the negotiations” to Braves beat writer, Dave O’Brien. Dave O’Brien believes that a deal might be close, but he isn’t really sure, as the Braves front office remains quiet about all negotiations until they are finalized.

Personally, I would love it if the Braves resigned Glavine and Ohman. I also think the Braves should either sign Bobby Abreu or trade for Nick Swisher. But at the very least, I think if we must, we could come up with a possible platoon with a combination of the many outfielders we currently have on the roster.
